Fraser’s Hill (Bukit Fraser) is a small hill station in the forest on the border of Pahang. It’s quieter, smaller and less developed than the Cameron Highlands: no big farms or traffic jams, just cool air, old stone bungalows, a clock tower and walking trails in misty forest. It makes a perfect weekend escape from KL.

Why go

  • Cool weather. A welcome break from the heat of the lowlands.
  • Peace and quiet. It’s small and sleepy, especially on weekdays.
  • Birds. Fraser’s Hill is one of the best birdwatching spots in Malaysia, with hundreds of species recorded.

What to do

Walk the forest trails

Several short, well-marked trails loop through the forest around the town. They’re a great way to see the montane forest, mossy trees and birds. Check at the information centre which trails are open, since some close after landslides or bad weather.

Go birdwatching

Early morning is best. Even if you’re not a birder, you’ll notice colourful species around the town and along the roads. Local guides can help you spot the special ones.

See the colonial buildings

The clock tower in the town centre is the classic photo. Around town you’ll find Tudor-style bungalows and old stone buildings from the colonial era, some now run as guesthouses.

Jeriau Waterfall and Allan’s Water

Jeriau Waterfall is a short drive from town in the forest, and Allan’s Water is a small lake near the centre. Check whether the waterfall is open before you go.

What to eat

Food options are limited, so don’t expect the variety of the cities. A handful of restaurants and food stalls near the town centre cover the basics. Many people treat themselves to an English-style afternoon tea or a roast at one of the old colonial guesthouses.

Getting there and around

  • By car: The easiest way. Drive from KL via Kuala Kubu Bharu, then up a long, winding mountain road. Check road conditions before you go.
  • Without a car: Public transport is limited. Most people drive, hire a driver, or take Grab from KL.
  • Getting around: The town is small and walkable. A car helps for the waterfall and further trails.

Where to stay

Choose from colonial-style bungalows, small hotels and a few resorts. There aren’t many rooms, so book ahead for weekends and holidays.

When to go

It’s cool all year, but expect rain and mist often. Weekdays are much quieter than weekends. Birders often come early in the year, when migrant birds pass through.
